Dynamo repairs for early luxury cars like Rolls Royce and Rolls Bentley

Having a lengthy background in heavy-duty alternators, we have developed skills in repairing and reconditioning larger dynamos found on early luxury cars, such as Rolls Bentley, Rolls Royce Ghost and Rolls Royce Phantom, etc.

Having a lengthy background in heavy-duty alternators, we have developed skills in repairing and reconditioning larger dynamos found on early luxury cars, such as Rolls Bentley, Rolls Royce Ghost and Rolls Royce Phantom, etc.

Dynamos fitted to these vehicle types tend to be more complex than you find on other cars of the same vintage, often having through shafts with linkages to drive magnetos, pumps, etc., and, utilising our machine shop, we have made specialised tooling to dismantle, repair and rewind these dynamos.

The dynamos fitted to these wonderful cars (such as Lucas and Rotax) often have ingenious ways of controlling output; making use of compound windings within the field coils - in conjunction with a third brush - to regulate the output, prior to the development of the voltage regulator. Even the armatures often have unconventional windings.

Because of the unique style and variety of dynamo designs used on these cars, we treat them on an individual basis.

Repairing your dynamo

If you want the unit repairing, we will dismantle your dynamo, test and replace any faulty components. If the field coils are found to be serviceable on test, we will re-tape and impregnate the coil with modern resin. If the armature is found to be serviceable, we will re-impregnate it with modern resin, and skim and undercut the commutator. We will also clean the component parts and repaint the body and end shields. We offer a one year guarantee on this service.

Reconditioning your dynamo

If you send your unit in for reconditioning we will rewind the armature and field coils. We will also replace the bearings, brushes and repair any damaged end-shields.

If you send your unit in for reconditioning we will rewind the armature and field coils. We will also replace the bearings, brushes and repair any damaged end-shields. The body of the unit will be burned out, blasted and repainted. Using modern winding methods and class F and H insulations, your dynamo will be restored to a higher specification than the original and we provide a 3 year guarantee.

We recommend ordering our reconditioning service if the dynamo has not previously been re-wound as the insulations originally used may have begun to deteriorate.

We aim to give our customers the best service we can and we would typically turn this sort of dynamo round in 5-10 working days.

We will provide you with an estimate detailing the work that needs doing, our recommendations and the cost involved.

Please note that if you decide not to go ahead with the repair or reconditioning we will still charge £75 for our time spent on the unit.

Armature rewinds

Rewinding armatures for Lucas and Rotax dynamos are usually around £250 (plus VAT).
